The Challenge

Many individuals struggle with the task of tracking their expenses, especially when they have multiple credit and debit cards. Budgeting becomes a headache when there is no clear indication of how much is left to spend in each expenses category. Managing finances is already a tedious task, how can it become a task that is less frustrating and more fun?

How might we design an app that tackles the frustration that comes with tracking expenses and budgeting, is easy to use, fun, and creates an enjoyable experience for users?

Target Audience

Researching and learning about the users was an important step in understanding how to develop the concept further and include useful features for this application.

PEOPLE
The app is mainly for students and young professionals who struggle with banking. It is for individuals who are often busy and want to track their expenses at a glance, or needs budgeting for their lifestyle. They may also need automatic reminders for payments and bills.

CONTEXT
The users are mostly in a school environment, in public spaces, or at their workplace while using the app.

ACTIVITIES
They are busy individuals roaming the city and are often on the go. These people spend most of their time getting an education and working at their jobs.

TECHNOLOGY
Wifi and data is needed for up-to-date syncing with linked bank accounts from the web. The app collects accounts of the user and generates a personalized budget based on their input of monthly average spendings, inputted through the onboarding in the beginning.

App Structure & User Flow

The user onboarding section of the user flow was important since it functions as a budget generator. It also allows the user to follow through a few simple steps before getting to the Home page.

Branding & Visual Design

Montserrat and Open Sans were chosen to reflect the idea of a friendly feeling, not overwhelmingly serious.

A bright pop of pink is used alongside with shades of light grey to give the app a clean and energetic look, and simple line-style icons were used to further enhance the friendliness of the app.

Prototype

This InVision prototype shows the process of how a first time user would navigate Reap.

Reflection

Since this is my first mobile app design and prototype, there are definitely some features that I would add if I were to expand on this project, including useful features such as a scan-and-deposit cheque feature, e-transfers, viewing statements, and perhaps include interesting data visualizations to display how close a user is to their budget.
